National Handloom Day Celebration

    As part of the National Handloom Day celebrations, the Directorate of Handlooms, Thiruvananthapuram, and the District Industries Centre, Idukki, jointly organized the observance of Handloom Day in Idukki district on Thursday, 7th August 2025. The function was held at the conference hall of the District Industries Centre, Idukki. Mr. Jayesh T.S., Senior Co-operative Inspector, delivered the welcome address. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. K.G. Sathyen, Chairman of the District Panchayat Standing Committee on Health and Welfare, and presided over by Mrs. Lissiamma Samuel, General Manager, District Industries Centre. During the event, three weavers who had woven the maximum amount during the past year were honoured and presented with certificates of appreciation. The awardees were Mrs. Hajara Aliyar, Mrs. Mary Tomy, and Mrs. Alice Thomas from the Panamkudy Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society, who secured the first, second, and third places respectively. They were given cash awards of ₹1000, ₹750, and ₹500 accordingly. A keynote address on the significance of the handloom sector and the relevance of Handloom Day was delivered by Mrs. Sindhu P.K., Deputy Registrar (in charge). As a gesture of encouragement, an Onam gift of ₹500 each was distributed to 16 weavers engaged in weaving during the past year, by the General Manager, District Industries Centre, Mrs. Lissiamma Samuel. This was followed by felicitations from Mr. Vishakh P.S., Assistant District Industries Officer; Mrs. Sumi Paul, Secretary, Panamkudy Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society; and senior weaver Mrs. Alice Thomas of the Panamkudy Society. Mrs. Shobhamol, Junior Co-operative Inspector, proposed the vote of thanks. Later, a variety of cultural programmes were performed under the leadership of the weavers of the Panamkudy Handloom Society and the staff of the District Industries Centre, Idukki. More than fifty people attended the event. Tea and lunch were arranged for all. The celebrations concluded around 2 p.m. after lunch.
